Yay! Thank god it's Friday. I missed Wednesday again and didn't post on schedule. Oops. Like any job, working independently has it's challenges both personally and professionally. Having small goals like posting here each week helps me stay motivated. If I miss these goals I feel like I'm letting you down and myself down too which can be deflating. In an effort to worry less and be kinder to myself I'm trying to concentrate on what I do achieve in my weeks instead. It's not always evident here because this sites focuses on my personal projects and interests. However, my time is divided between doing graphic design for clients, custom craft orders and my own projects. Ensuring client deadlines are met is my first priority. If I miss a beat and Wednesdays come and go, know that I'm still thinking of you and will be back as soon as I can.
One thing I've learned from working independently - and since I mostly work from home - is that there's only so much one-way conversation you can have with a cat! This lack of colleague chatter has lead me to a love of podcasts. Perhaps you work alone or enjoy podcasts too so I thought it'd be great to share a few of my favourite ones.
My current top five are;
This American Life Thoughtful, honest and captivating storytelling.
Radiolab Science and philosophy ideas for the curious.
Here's the Thing with Alec Baldwin Heated, unexpected and insightful conversations.
99% Invisible Architecture and design subjects often overlooked that shapes our world.
360 Documentaries A diverse mix of tales from across the globe.
Design Matters, with Debbie Millman
After the Jump, with Grace Bonney from Design*Sponge
Studio Audience, by It's Nice That
The Accidental Creative, with Tom Henry
All in the Mind, with Lynne Malcolm
Local Melbourne mums, Emma Clark and Tess McCabe recently release a podcast called, The New Normal about multitasking parents. While I'm not a parent I enjoyed these casual chats with women balancing the demands of modern life.
Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favs? Let me know in the comments below, I'd love to discover something new!
Have a super weekend.
